Saturday 24 June – at 10am and again at 2pm
The Sandown heritage trail created by Arron Swaffer and Hollie Richards resurrects forgotten moments in Sandown’s eclectic and illustrious past. As the fabric of the town fades away, we are told stories that fall in layers to manufacture the origin of a place. A headstrong flame-haired poet scales the chalky cliffs of Culver, a radical journalist when not defending liberty cultivates roses and conscientious objectors show there is another way. These are the ghost echoes that are the roots of Sandown. As we walk, taking in the wonder and the debris, can we do anything to arrest the vanishing?
Your guide for the walk is the poet King Stammers in the guise of John Lowe (a character from Lauren Fry’s Foible&Folly project). The walk will take around an hour and the conditions are easy to moderate.
Muster point – The Bandstand, Culver Parade.
Map of the walk can be found here created by Google: Map data @2023 Google

This event is part of the Biosphere in the Bays project. Biosphere in the Bays is a series of trails exploring our relationship with the urban and rural landscapes around us. Each trail will be an immersive experience promoting a rediscovery of the different elements that go to make up the Bay. Biosphere in the Bays will invite the community to explore how the landscape has inspired local culture and customs and feedback garnered will help reimagine the future
