Envisioning a Fantastical Future For Sandown
Sandown Survival is the exciting final residency within the Arts Council England-supported Sandown Rocks project. Inspired by Charles Darwin’s time in Sandown where he began writing of On the Origin of Species, this initiative invites us to embark on a fantastical journey, imagining Sandown’s future where its inherent strengths evolve in extraordinary and unexpected ways. It’s a “what if?” exploration, embracing the surreal and whimsical to dream a vibrant future for the town.
Artist in Residence: Tommy Brentnall
We are over the moon to welcome Tommy Brentnall as our artist in residence for Sandown Survival. Tommy will approach this commission like a residency, immersing himself in Sandown for an extended period. He’ll be drawing, researching, and gestating ideas, while also running public workshops to gather material and insights directly from the community. His aim is to explore Sandown’s future by deeply understanding its present, then extrapolating and “drawing” a future out of this extensive work.

Tommy will be an artist in residence at Boojum during August, with the exhibition opening on Friday, September 6th, from 6-8 pm, and running until Saturday, November 29th.
