The Regatta Hat Factory

After the success of The Great Sandown Hat Revival in 2023, Sandown Carnival is offering everyone the chance to be part of a hatmaking extravaganza for the town’s Regatta this summer.

The Regatta Hat Factory will open its doors at Boojum&Snark, 105 Sandown High Street from Wednesday 17th July, with budding hatmakers able to drop in for free, creative inspiration over a whole four weeks leading up to Regatta day in August.

“We were delighted to bring back the tradition of hat-wearing at Sandown Bay Regatta last year. It was clear the community wanted more, so we’re really stepping up what we can offer the town’s residents and visitors this year,” says Paul Coueslant, Sandown Carnival chair

Artists Joel Lines and Teresa Grimaldi will be there to help bring your creations to life. You can choose to make hats using the materials provided or you can bring along your own ideas and Teresa and Joel can help you create your hat. Remember to use recycled, upcyled or sustainable materials so we can reduce the impact of our activities.

The Regatta Hat Factory at Broadlea Primary School
The Regatta Hat team went to Broadlea Primary School with a very special letter from the famous hat designer, David Shilling. He asked the children to consider the sea when making hats.

When I think of the sea nowadays I immediately focus on what we as Earthlings can do for the Sea , not just  what we expect from the sea . I hope all you hat lovers , especially the first-timers , will make extraordinary , well thought out creations that are as  lovely to wear as they are to behold! Glamour , elegance are a priority but always with a sprinkling of fun! David Shilling

As you can see the children had a great time and made a variety of hats using seedpaper, natural dyes and their own flags calling people to respect our seas.
