To mark the new year, we commissioned a window installation by abstract artist Kathy Williams. This Time: This Place can be viewed as a contemplation of the end of one year and the beginning of another or the end of one moment and the beginning of another. To do this, artist Kathy Williams has taken elements of emotions and activities associated with this time of year and created gestures of movement and colour that are assembled into the spaces that run along the windows of Boojum & Snark. Each mark has its own space, yet is linked to the whole. The pieces could be assembled in many different ways but for now, they sit together like this.
“I live in Sandown and recognise the heat, life and vitality that runs through the place which is sometimes at odds to the many empty, unused, run-down and often forgotten buildings that give the town its visual identity. However, there can be beauty and vibrancy where we live.” Kathy Williams
“We balance the positives with the unsures, togetherness with isolation and know that elements are often fleeting but come together at different times to re-group, re-assemble, re-align and change shape as we all move on.” Kathy Williams
As a commentary on where we live, This Time: This Place also resonates with the story of Sandown. As part of our vision to weave placemaking into our creative commissions, this narrative is important as it illustrates the paths we traverse up and down during our time as well as acknowldeging that wherever you are there’s always something wonderful to see, feel and learn along the way.
Kathy Williams lives in Sandown and is a graduate from The Royal College of Art. Williams’ process involves tearing the paint away from the canvas, creating painting in physical space by pulling layers of paint apart. She seeks to liberate her work from the burden of image, allowing the paint to do only what paint can do. She has exhibited in London, Manchester and Berlin and across the island. Kathy has a studio where she continues to work with paint and teaches both painting and clay classes. For more information follow Kathy on instagram @kathywilliamspainting
